Sloan Digital Sky Survey Spectroscopic Lens Search. I. Discovery of Intermediate-redshift Star-forming Galaxies behind Foreground Luminous Red Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present a catalog of 49 spectroscopic strong gravitational lens candidates selected from a Sloan Digital Sky Survey sample of 50996 luminous red galaxies. Potentially lensed star-forming galaxies are detected through the presence of background oxygen and hydrogen nebular emission lines in the spectra of these massive foreground galaxies. This multiline selection eliminates the ambiguity of single-line identification and provides a very promising sample of candidate galaxy-galaxy lens systems at low to intermediate redshift, with foreground redshifts ranging from 0.16 to 0.49 and background redshifts from 0.25 to 0.81. Any lenses confirmed within our sample would be important new probes of early-type galaxy mass distributions, providing complementary constraints to those obtained from currently known lensed high-redshift quasars. Subject headings: gravitational lensing—galaxies: elliptical and lenticular, cD—galaxies: starburst

The Sloan Lens Acs Survey. I. a Large Spectroscopically Selected Sample of Massive Early-type Lens Galaxies
The Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey is an efficient Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Snapshot imaging survey for new galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses. The targeted lens candidates are selected spectroscopically from within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database of galaxy spectra for having multiple nebular emission lines at a redshift significantly higher than that of the SDSS target ga...
متن کاملLyman Break Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey First Data Release
We report the discovery of six compact, starburst galaxies with redshifts 2.3 < z < 2.8 and r-band magnitudes 19.8−20.5 in the Quasar Catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey First Data Release (SDSS DR1). The SDSS spectra of these objects resemble the composite spectrum of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z ≈ 3, but the galaxies are 4−5 magnitudes brighter than an “L∗” LBG and 2 − 3 magnitudes br...
متن کاملThe Cosmic Horseshoe: Discovery of an Einstein Ring around a Giant Luminous Red Galaxy
We report the discovery of an almost complete (∼ 300) Einstein ring of diameter 10 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5). Spectroscopic data from the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory reveals that the deflecting galaxy has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion in excess of 400 kms and a redshift of 0.444, whilst the source is a star-forming galaxy with a reds...
متن کاملRest-frame Mid-infrared Detection of an Extremely Luminous Lyman Break Galaxy with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (irs)
We present the first rest-frame 4 m detection of a Lyman break galaxy. The data were obtained using the 16 m imaging capability of the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph. The target object, J134026.44+634433.2, is an extremely luminous Lyman break galaxy at z 1⁄4 2:79, first identified in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra (as reported by Bentz et al.). The source is strongly detected with a fl...
متن کاملTwo New Large Separation Gravitational Lenses from SDSS
We present discovery images, together with follow-up imaging and spectroscopy, of two large separation gravitational lenses found by our survey for wide arcs (the CASSOWARY). The survey exploits the multicolour photometry of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to find multiple blue components around red galaxies. CASSOWARY 2 (or “the Cheshire Cat”) is composed of two massive early-type galaxies at z =...
